Sometimes it is possible to rebuild an engine that has stopped functioning, instead of replacing it completely. This might involve replacing a few of the engine’s parts which, once the new ones are installed, will have the rest of the parts of the engine performing like new. Some people rebuild engines as a hobby, but unless you are very experienced, it is not a good idea to try to rebuild and engine by yourself, because there is a risk of injury and an even greater risk of damaging your car and needing even more expensive repairs. For one thing, you would have to have the makings of a repair shop in your own garage, including a car jack, a hoist, and plenty of different tools. When we rebuild an engine, we start by inspecting all its parts to see where the problem is. Sometimes the fix is as simple as replacing the isolation rubber on the harmonic balancer; all rubber parts eventually wear out, and they wear out even more quickly in cold weather. The problem might also be that the cylinder heads are bent, in which case they will need to be replaced. Sometimes you need to repair of replace your crankshaft; if necessary, we can resurface the bearing journals on the crankshaft, which is less expensive than replacing the whole crankshaft or the whole engine. We will also look for cracks in your car’s engine; if the engine is made of cast iron, this is done using Magnaflux, and if it is an aluminum engine, we use dye penetrant. The problem might also be with the cylinder head, its valves, its springs, or its keeper grooves. Whatever the issue with your engine might be, you can trust Elkhart Mechanics to rebuild your engine safely, efficiently, and for a good price. |
