engine air filter

Picture
Air filters do just that. They filter air. Your engine is just a big air pump. And just like you it likes fresh air! Your filter has to suck in all the dirt, road debris, smoke, and everything else that is in the air. And you know air quality isn’t as good as it used to be so you can imagine what your engine has to ingest.

Imagine smoker’s lungs, their all black from years of inhaling tar. Through the years after all the tar, air can’t move through them and they start hacking and coughing. The same thing will happen with your engine if you don’t change your air filter. It will start running rough and possibly leave you stranded on the side of the road. So get to Elkhart Mechanics and have them check your air filter!

The engine air filter keeps dirt, dust, and soot from getting into your engine. Like any part, when it is working well, you don’t notice it. When your engine air filter gets too dirty and needs to be replaced, you might notice that your vehicle does not accelerate as quickly as it used to. Under ordinary circumstances, an engine air filter lasts three years or more before it needs to be replaced. Some car manufacturers recommend changing your engine air filter every 30,000 miles, but Chevrolet recommends replacing it every 45,000 miles. Your engine air filter met get dirty more quickly than that if you spend a lot of time stuck in traffic or if you drive on dirt roads.

Elkhart Mechanics is a full service garage, so we are here to replace your engine air filter whenever it needs to be replaced. We can replace it much for a much lower price than you would pay if you had your engine air filter replaced at the dealership. Engine air filter replacement is one of the easiest unnecessary repairs for mechanics to talk customers into, and we will only replace it if it really needs to be replaced, and only if you want us to. Most of the time, a dirty engine air filter is not the cause of the problem. When you bring your car in for inspection or maintenance, we are always willing to show you your engine air filter and how much dirt is on it, and we will only replace it when you tell us to. Sometimes people go for longer than three years without replacing the engine air filter without a problem, so you should be skeptical if a mechanic tells you that you need a new engine air filter when you have recently replaced yours.
